Many anglers are fond of catching various species of fish. Some want to catch fish that are extremely huge. Others enjoy angling for fish that are healthy. As for me, I always to look after fishes that are difficult to catch.

You may think that this idea is quite strange, but there are a lot of reasons why you should also indulge yourself in more challenging angling adventures.

When I was young, my uncle taught me how to catch grass carp.He said that catching this aquatic animal will test your patience, but will also add more fun and excitement as well. I have proven that what he said was true. It is really hard to catch these fishes at first.

However, when you learn some tips on catching them, it will be a lot easy eventually, and these tricks are what I would like to share with you if you are interested in catching them too.

Materials Needed

Fishing Rod

Whether you are an expert angler or an amateur fisher who is beginning to learn how to fish, this stick is an important trick for landing your target fish.

Always remember that grass carps are extremely strong fighters when they are in danger, so make sure that the fishing rod that you will use is also strong. Always go for a stick that can take the blend. The rod that you will use should be of average weight should be no longer than 7 feet.

Fishing Reel

Choose a rod which is accurate enough to land your target fish. Even a little inaccuracy can cause the carp to escape. It is also crucial to choose one that has a drag system good enough to fight the aggression of grass carps. Always select a rod that is sensitive enough and casts accurately.

Bait

Because of its name, many think that aquatic plants are favorite foods of grass carps. However, their most preferred meals are different from other carps. You can try worm, berries, berries, or fresh grass.

The most effective bait, however, that you can use is a mixture of bread crumbs and corn. Tomatoes are also perfect baits for grass carps. These things are very convenient, and you can find them easily.

If you use corn, I suggest that you use canned ones than field corn. If you use field corn, you will need to wait for it to ferment after you spend extra time for immersing it in water.

Large Hook

The best hooks for grass carps are round hooks because their design fits the mouth of these fish. The ideal weight of hooks that you can use is about 20 lbs.

Fishing Line

You can use any fishing lines such as monofilament and fluorocarbon as long as your fishing leader can load up to 20 lbs. Monofilament line is an excellent choice for floating purposes. For instance, you can use it for a floating veggie fly if a huge grass carp are eating the grass clippings that are on the shoreline.

I also like to use fluorocarbon fishing line because it tends to be very invisible. Occasionally, I also use braided fishing line because this type of line is also very sensitive.

The Step By Step Procedure

Step 1: Select The Best Location

Grass carps are known to be an-introduced fish species which means that you cannot find them in most fishing spots. They usually swim in lakes and ponds where they help in controlling the vegetation population.

These fish can multiply fast, so some farmers also need to manage their population. It is very important to ask permission from fish farmers or landowners if you are interested in catching grass carps.

Step 2: Set Up Your Rod And Reel Right

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you set up all your fishing tackles properly. It will also help if you use a medium heavy rod that has a size of at least 7 feet, and set it up with a reel with 20lb fishing line capacity.

Do not take strength and size for granted because taking these things into account increases your chances of catching a grass carp and prevents the carp from escaping your hook.

Step 3: Tie A Knot

Tie a circle and a knot to hold the bait that you will use. Afterwards, you will need to hook it into the tip of your fishing line. I suggest that you use round hooks because these hooks fit the mouth of the carp while the fishing line is pulling the eye of the hook.

Never use treble hooks since this type of hooks may hurt and injure the carp.

Step 4: Bait Your Fishing Location

Use whole kernel corn and bread to chum the fishing area. If you want to, you can also mix freshly cut grass with sweet corn to add chances of landing your target grass carp. Spread the mixture in clusters through a large area.

It is also important to be mindful of the bait area. Make sure it is wide enough and around 25 feet from the bank. This distance is ideal for attracting carps

Based on my experience, the best time to visit your chosen fishing area is at least one hour before angling while the best time to bait your fishing location is between 1 to 2 hour before angling.

Allow the bait of chum to settle untouched on the surface of the water, and observe for any carp that is moving towards your fishing spot and attempting to feed on the corn or grass.

Step 5: Carefully Approach The Water's Edge

Soon, you will notice the carps eating the bait floating on the surface of the water. They do not have a good sense of sight and hearing, so they need to come to the surface to look for food.

Make sure to be extremely careful when getting near the water's edge until you reach the distance which you think is best for setting your baited hook into the water.

Step 6: Bait Your Hook

I found out that the best bait to use for catching grass crap is a cherry tomato. Put a half of it on your hook.

Cutting the tomato into half and baiting it will make the hook's point completely covered, and this tip works well because carp usually devour your bait before it recognizes your hook, and swim away from the lure or bait.

Next, you need to drop the tomatoes that you attach to your hooks. Do this step as carefully and as less disturbing as possible. You can also add some breadcrumbs in addition to tomatoes to add efficiency.

There are also instances when you need to pre-bait so that the carps will become familiar with the source of their food.

Set the tomato with care and let it suspend at the bottom of the water.

Step 7: Manage Your Fishing Line

Make sure always to keep your line steady. Place your finger on the line, so that you can feel if there is a carp that is devouring your bait.

Allow the carp to grab the bait, and make sure that it has completely bitten it before you position your hook and gently raise the tip of your fishing rod. The hook will eventually set itself up while you are hauling the tips of your fishing rod.

Relax your haul upon the fishing reel because carps will always attempt to escape. Work the carp that you catch as quickly as you can, but do not overtire the fish because you might need to release it after you catch it.
